Sweet (Sugar) Conversations

Sugar gliders are small creatures with a lot to say. They make a sound for almost anything. Personally,I think that's what makes them such great pets. You are able to have quiet pets during the day that need almost no attention, and fun little guys to play with before bed. Their personalities really allow you to have a unique bond with each glider. In order to fully understand the sugar glider experience it's important to understand all the noises they make:

Purr

Just like cats, sugar gliders purr. While it may not be as loud as a cat. When a glider is excited or just feels comfortable with your presence they may let out a little purr.

Crabbing

When you hear sugar gliders crab, it is the most frightening sound you'll ever hear. It sounds as if there were cicadas screaming at you. Typically this sound is not a usual glider sound. Although if you do hear this unusual sound, it means your glider is not happy. They make this sound when they think they are in danger, in order to scare away predators. In this case, they want people they are not used to, to bother them.

Hiss

Hissing is also not as common but it does happen. Although it does not mean what you think it might. Hissing is a sound they make while spitting into their hands to groom themselves. Sugar gliders are very clean creatures and love grooming themselves. In my gliders case, Mushu makes more sound when cleaning himself compared to Wasabi.

Barking

I would have never thought sugar gliders bark. While I don't have video evidence of my gliders making any noise, I had to record them barking. Barking for gliders can mean almost anything from boredom, to attention seeking, to letting you know they're annoyed. Of my two gliders, Wasabi is a lot more vocal when it comes to barking.

Overall gliders are fun creatures with lots to say. The best part of having them is trying to figure out exactly what they are trying to tell you.

I get more and more fascinated with sugar gliders each time I read your blog! I think it is so interesting to learn about all the sounds they make and how each one has a meaning behind it. I also think it is so cool how sugar gliders can make the sound of a cat and dog. I so happy you posted that video because I have been wanting to hear what they sound like!

They are fascinating creatures! When I first heard the barking I had to record it because I was so thrown off by it. They really are the best of both worlds as pets! I love it so much

Oh wow I didn't know they made so many types of noises! I'm glad that you went into detail about what each of the sounds mean. I thought the point you made about the hissing sound was interesting because that is much different from when most other animals hiss. I found the video entertaining, I would of never guessed that sound came from a sugar glider. Reading your posts I can tell that your passionate about your pets and that is wonderful! I'm glad they can have a happy home with you! 😁
