When we think about today’s media, its really hard not to name more than one outlet. We are consumed by ads, videos, comments and trends more than ever. Trying to convince anyone to put their phones down or to stop the endless scrolling is pretty hard. Yet, The Wall Street Journal has recently come out with a video campaign dedicated to putting your phone down and reading.
The video targets adults between the ages of 20-40. Which seems a little broad but those adults tend to be on using all sorts of medias. Which can go from commenting mean reviews on yelp to sharing the latest memes on facebook.
There is sucess behind the medias spoken about and the target audience. Ever since social media and, overall, the internet, online agendas have skyrocketed.
20 year-olds through 40 year-olds seem to be the most intertwined with these agendas. By calling them out for filling their heads with meaningless information or being too involved online, I believe the campaign can allow them to rethink, I know it did for me.
With that being said, this new campaign has a lot of benefits for The Wall Street Journal and their audience.
The video for their campaign really emphasized how much we do online and how useless it may seem. My personal favorite example of this was seeing a rainbow being shoved up a girls through as a parallel for all the random information we take in (this one through snapchat).
Another example was when the people in the video’s heads exploded from all the useless information they were being fed by the media.
Images such as these allow the target audience see an extreme of what is actually happening today. The Wall Street Journal may have more of their audience ditch their online website and start reading their newspaper to avoid filling their brains with nothing.
