Double-tap that post… or not

Instagram has recently launched a test to see how users are effected by “likes”. This test includes the inability to see how many people have liked other posts.

Instagram is a like based social media app. Influencers are paid based on how many likes they get and brands only hire people with high amount with likes. As well as people tend to like things that are getting a lot of likes, which according to instragram, is not what the app was intended to be used for.

When interviewed by TechCrunch instagram stated that they want people to feel free to post whatever they want on the app without living in fear about how many likes it will get compared to other people on their feed.

The internet is not happy about that. Everyday users are complaining about the change. Via twitter, people are complaining about how this change is negative and removes the point of the app, trying to get likes.

Futhermore liking things has more behind it, people like political figures, celebrities and companies. How will you know what or who you’re friends are liking and is it a negative person?

On the other hand according to The Business Insider, “Some influencers and celebrities have complained that this change will hurt them, while others say it won’t affect their businesses. Instagram says it is working on ways to help creators while it experiments with removing likes.”

Christina Galbato, social media influencer, says she hopes instagram removes the ability to see likes. She says the positives outweigh the negatives. That there won’t be a division between influencers.

From the PR perspective, this could be very hit or miss. By removing likes companies are enable to be more authenic rather than be flashy and try to gain more likes than their competition.

It will allow public figures to not seem like they are doing certain trends for the “views” or the “likes”.

On the other hand, a lot of companies such as Fashion Nova, SheIn, and most beauty production companies rely on influencers to wear their products in order to sell more.

Companies may suffer from only using models to show off their product. The reason influencers have become so popular is because of the “Hey, I’m just like you. Buy this product and you can look as great as I do”.

Ultimately, I think companies who know how to be authenically themselves will do fine and companies that have only gotten popular through likes will suffer.
